Farm Newbies...

Mama Bibi...
"Shhh...listen kiddoes"

"someone is talking about us"

"Ma, what is it?"

"maybe if I close one eye and cover the other and raise my left ear higher, I can hear?"

"well...did it work?"

"naw...I was just trying to look cute for the picture"

Bibi, our milking goat, gave us two babies
and they look nothing like each other
the little doe on the right looks like mama Bibi
the little ram on the left looks like papa Curly
cute and interesting
Bibi is a first time mother and doing a fine job at it

as many times as my husband went to check on Bibi before their births...
she went and did it, after all, when he wasn't looking
makes me think of when the Lord said to Job...
Do you know the time when the wild mountain goats bear young?
or can you mark when the deer gives birth?
can you number the months that they fulfill?
or do you know the time when they bear young?
Job 39:1,2

what do we know?
Almighty God knows everything
even every thought in our hearts

May your day or night find blessing in God's grace.

Sorrel Picking...

After watching for a time...
all the lovely sorrel, aka roselle hibiscus, aka Florida cranberry, flowers...

bloom their way into sunshine...

they then developed...

into beautiful, waxy-looking calyxes...

ready for the picking

with the sorrel plants still blooming and giving us fruit into the next season...

I will be drying some for tea throughout the next months...

and making some homemade jam this week with fresh picked sorrel

sunshine, warm weather and cranberry-colored sorrel

are some of those outdoor blessings from the Lord

May your day or night find warmth and sunshine in God's grace.

Pippi or Pepe? and a little Child...

It was time to get out of the "box"

my new layer chicks are growing up and...
it was just time to leave the security of the "baby" cage
and they loved it
and I loved it 'cause I hate cages

Pippi? wherefore art thou?!!

here she (or is it he?) comes, running up from the back

Pippi, who has grown from a tiny hatchling who was abandoned by mama hen before hatching...

is now this big and nearly covered with real feathers
and what a nice surprise she has turned out to be
she has been caring for the little layers like a big sister (or is it brother?)

"okay, you gang of whippets...
let's go get us some bugs!"

"just follow me"

"don't forget to look down a lot...
them buggers are in these here grasses somewhere"

yeah, Pippi, you good chickie, you
keep 'em marching and growing fat on some juicy bugs
and don't forget to show them how to eat some greens, too

hmmm...could she be a he?
maybe Pepe, rather than Pippi?
we shall see

speaking of the young leading...

And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse,
and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord:
And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord:
and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes,
neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
But with righteousness shall he judge the poor,
and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth:
and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins,
and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the kid;
and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
and a little child shall lead them.
Isaiah 11:1-6

This is the Christ, who came into the world, and now saves and guides his people.
and He gives them peace in a sin-filled world of chaos and disorder.

May your day or night be filled with God's grace.

Omelet Taco...

Because we are unconventional in our breakfasts on Pilgrim's Farm...
our freedom to turn breakfast upside down and eat what fuels our bodies for the day's work...
is all the more tastier

we like vegetables and plenty fruits in the morning...
and herbs to help ward off bacteria and viruses as we mingle with the animals...
and dig in the dirt

we eat plenty of our own hens' eggs for lutein (an antioxidant) and protein

and an egg omelet taco is a good filler for the morning
easy and fast to make
we make omelets of our choice...
heat some taco shells...
stuff the shells with the cooked omelet...
top with some yogurt (or sour cream)...
and add fresh herbs for more than just a garnish

May your day or night be delicious in the grace of the Lord.

The Little Hen that Never Became...

Sometimes...
the Lord has to remind me that He is sovereign in all things
even in the form of the tiny creatures of our farm

we decided to enlarge our egg-laying population of hens to offset the frequency...
of our brooding hens to sit

so, my husband brought home a half dozen sweet little puffballs of the Rhode Island...
or maybe they are New Hampshire breed
we aren't really sure which
but, no matter, they are egg layers that do not care to brood

Pippi certainly took an interest in them...
and watched them curiously...
through the "peep" holes in the chicks' temporary home

on their third day on the farm...
I introduced the chicks to the outside world with Pippi who by now...
has become familiar with the green grass and finding out the joy of dust baths

but, I began to notice the one little redheaded chick in the photo below...
who didn't seem quite as active as the other chicks

she seemed so delicate and a bit lethargic...

and more interested in keeping physical contact as if to keep warm...
even though it was quite warm outside

as the others grew during the next couple of days, the little redhead did not
in fact, she didn't seem to grow at all

I would see her eat and drink, but not with the appetite the other chicks had

yesterday morning, she ate a wee bit and drank a wee bit...
and through the morning, I watched her carefully
but, before noon, she seemed weakened and uninterested

I kept her warm and tried to help her eat to see if she would gain some strength...
to no avail
I finally had to acknowledge that she was dying and felt so helpless to help her...
I cried
she died shortly while I held her and she was buried under my favorite rose bush

we have no idea what was wrong with her except that she came to us a bit frail...
and smaller than the other chicks...
it is not my way to return an animal for a defect or illness
she would not have fared any better taken back to where we got her
if anyone has an idea of what might have been wrong, I'm all ears

in the scheme of what is happening in the whole world...
does a tiny chick dying really matter?

she was put into my hand by God...
for whatever reason He had and then He took her away so very soon
perhaps, the Lord was teaching me something
I remembered what the Lord Jesus said in Matthew 10:29-31 and Luke 12: 6,7

Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing?
and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Fear ye not therefore,
ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings,
and not one of them is forgotten before God?
But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Fear not therefore:
ye are of more value than many sparrows.

the little hen that never became...
became a reminder to me of how my sovereign Saviour, Jesus Christ...
cares for His creatures, both great and small...
and how valuable I am to Him through His great work of salvation

May your day or night find blessing in the Lord's grace.

Saturday Farm Postcard...

Where tiny puffs of down grow to live a good life of ranging free and giving eggs

And God created great whales,
and every living creature that moveth,
which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind,
and every winged fowl after his kind:
and God saw that it was good.
And God blessed them, saying,
Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas,
and let fowl multiply in the earth.
Genesis 1:21,22

May your day or night find multiplied blessings in God's grace.
