Two Things...

It finally happened...
my electric slow cooker decided to retire for good...
and, kicked the bucket

fine with me...
'cause I was looking for a good excuse to get a dutch oven

now, I realize the dutch oven pot is not quite the same as the slow cooker
but, it does what I want as far as...
off-the-grid cooking

we've been working slowly towards less usage of the grid
not because it's the "thing" to do...
(nothing wrong with being on-grid)

nor because it's more "spiritual"...
(nothing to do with worshiping the Lord)

nor because we are trying to be more "green"...
(no use trying to save a dying world; God will take care of that)

nor because we are trying to leave less "footprints"...
(although we do try to be good stewards)

no, no...not those things at all

it's because electricity rates are getting higher than the clouds...
and a slow cooker uses electricity many hours of the day...
and for the very reason...
I just simply...
like cooking on a "campfire"
it's fun and it's frugal, moneywise

so, my husband bought me a Lodge dutch oven...
got us a coalpot (seen below)...
and we have our own coals from wood chopped off our homestead
so, in my next post, I'd like to show you how I cook with them

meanwhile...
the pullets are now laying...
the hens have laid off of brooding for now...

even Penny...
the hen who seems hatched to forever love brooding...
and who finally went back to laying her wee creamy white eggs

it is a pleasure, indeed...
to have more eggs than we can use on Pilgrim's Farm...
and have enough to sell to a few egg loving clients

It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise
than to hear the song of fools.
For as the crackling of thorns under a pot,
so is the laughter of the fools;
this also is vanity.
Ecclesiastes 7:5-6

May your day or night find joy in the grace of the Lord.

  2. Dear Jean, This is such a good idea, I use a dutch oven often, but I pop it in the oven. We are also getting so many eggs again. Things are starting to turn green! Starting spring cleaning and getting things freshened up!
Loved seeing this post with the chickens and love the Dutch Oven.... Sweet!

  3. I never used a slow cooker so when my small rice cooker croaked I bought a bigger one which steams, and slow cooks and makes rice and risotto...took it to a pot luck with chees grits..you look like you have no electric..I like the dutch for cornbread and camping
